Week 6

Another week in the books, and still 2 teams running undefeated.

Now #12 ranked Northwestern will have to prove their worth when they travel to face a 5-0 Ohio State.

Michigan (still #24) have a 5-0 record within their sights as they also take it out of town to meet a 3-1 Penn State.

A much maligned Iowa side, struggling at 1-3 this season are welcomed to East Lansing to face a smarting Spartans.

As always, post any reviews of matches or links to pics or replays in the comments below :-)

Good Luck,

  1. #12 Northwestern 24 defeated #9 Ohio State 7

This game was closer than the scoreline suggests, it was a matter of timing for Northwestern's Offense, Defense and Special Teams.

Ohio State won the toss and decided to get their defence on the field to assert their dominance, this idea soon backfired as Freshman Joe Anderson returned the opening kickoff 93 Yards for a TD, earning coach Timmy6321 the "Hear the pin drop" trophy.

Ohio State promptly marched down the field but were found wanting on a 35 yard FG that sailed wide right. Northwestern turned this field position into a good drive, but was halted in the redzone by a Joe Mauro interception.

The tide of the game had turned as again Ohio State marched down the field, but the kicker let his team down for a second time, missing wide left on a 41 yard attempt.

NU were unable to move the ball on the next drive and punted on a 3 and out to give Terrelle Pryor and his offense just under 2 minutes to tie the game. Pryor started the drive well with a 15 yard Option QB Keeper, on the next play Pryor went for it all and was promptly picked in the deep by Junior corner Jordan Mabin.

This left NU with 45 seconds on the clock. NU threw alot of underneath balls until 3rd and 10 from their own 45. In a wonderful piece of QB skill, Joe Mauro pump faked to a short slant which drew in the safety ad he was able to throw the ball deep to WR Jeremy Ebert for a 54 yard score as the half expired.

The second half opened with a 3 and out for Ohio State's offence. On the next drive NU was able to move the ball against a very aggressive Ohio State defense with short slants and outside runs. On 3rd and short NU ran a play action into an Ohio State 8 man blitz, the pass was completed to HB Daniel who managed to avoid all the defenders for a score.

Ohio State again came out on offence with something to prove, this time NU's defence was not enough with Terrelle Pryor burning a sloppy cover 2 for a TD. The following kickoff was fumbled by Freshman HB Lawrence Schmidt handing Ohio State the ball inside the redzone to start the 4th quarter.

Ohio moved the ball at will and found themselves on the 3 yard line for the second play of the 4th Quarter. Ohio came out in a Goalline defence and ran a Play Action pass, a great read from NU DE Brown led to a hurried pass which fell into the hands of Jordan Mabin, his 2nd INT of the game, for a touchback.

NU was able to convert 3 3rd downs on their next drive and run the clock down. To rub salt in, NU kicked a FG as time expired to complete a remarkable 17 point win.

The player of the game was Corner Jordan Mabin who picked off Pryor twice, the most important was his INT in the endzone with 4:49 remaining in the game. Ohio State never touched the ball again.

  2. Nice work Timmy, almost the trophy for winding the last 5 mins down as well I see.

    Iowa @ Michigan State

Michigan entertained a 1-3 Iowa at a snowy Spartan Stadium this evening.

Iowa elected to receive the ball after winning the toss, but nothing came of the opening posessions. Both teams forced to punt after relatively short drives.
Iowa's second possession was no more fruitful, again ending in a kick downfield.
The Spartan offense was starting to warm-up in the blustery conditions, with a 57 yard bomb over single-coverage to strong WR Fred Smith the result.

Iowa still had their offense on the field to start the 2nd quarter, taking the ball downfield to tie the game at 7.

Defense was to be key all match, with Iowa forcing another punt after a rather weak 3 and out.

The Hawkeyes' RB Jewel Hampton really lived up to his name on the next drive, rushing the ball on 5 consecutive plays, with a 26 yard dart up the middle through zone defense putting the points on the board.

Receiving the ball with under 2 minutes left, Spartans Head Coach WolfMan30483 scrapped the run game, and let QB Kirk Cousins warm his arm up a bit more. 4 completions from 7 attempts on this drive for 69 yards and the TD.

Still with 55 seconds in the half, Iowa took the same approach, airing it out into good enough field position for the 33 yard FG and the lead going into the break.

    HT Iowa - 17
    Spartans - 14

The second half began with a systematic drive from Michigan State, with Cousins again picking on a shallow zone and loose Safeties to arc a scoring pass for 39 yards.

The next possessions for each team reverted to a punt-off, but Iowa were determined to stay in the match after a 43 yard FG was successful.

Picking up a total of 69 yards to start the 4th quarter, the Spartans were now beginning to take real control of this match, with WR Mark Bell collecting his 3rd TD catch. (Ohhh that rhymed LOL).

After a somewhat successful drive, totaling 13 plays and taking 2:16 off the 4th quarter clock, Iowa were forced to turn the ball over after a 4th down conversion attempt fell short.

With running the clock down the aim for the Spartans, RB Edwin Baker surprised most when he turned a simple outside rush into a booming 38 yarder with some hard-nosed moves. Once Iowa had burnt their 3 Timeouts, Cousins took responsibility and kneeled twice to ensure a form-returning win for Michigan State.

    FT Iowa - 20
    Spartans - 28

Man of the match for the Spartans goes to WR Mark Bell, with 7 receptions for 118 yards and 3 TD's.

Jewel Hampton was the pick of the Buckeyes, averaging 4.9 yards on 25 carries for 123 total and a TD.

  4. LOL I used Hawkeyes earlier in the report and then just must have zoned out for that last bit there.

The trophy is for winding down the last 5 mins in the 4th quarter (the entire 4th quarter for us since we play 5 min qtrs)

  5. When are the pics going up??

I though of a really good pick last night.... when we play against each other (or when you play Bob) take a photo from the RT looking straight across the field capturing the O line and D line engaged on a run play... or maybe about to engage..... Would have bot player teams, but wont have 1 team in a stronger postion than the other.

    Whaddya think?

  6. Good idea man. Havent got a pic from BC yet, which is why the banner hasn't been done/uploaded. I was thinking the same thing though, i.e taking a pic from our head to head match.

I was gonna do like a 3 pane banner, of each of ours, will look good I think.
