Week 8 is here, and it provides some pretty interesting matchups.
Now #3 ranked Northwestern entertain #22 Penn State (4-2) in a nationally televised night match. BC's Michigan outscored this Penn State team by 2 points just two weeks ago, and is the source of their only conference loss, so far.
Michigan have what should be a routine assignment when they host Akron (2-3). Coming off a win last week over Miami University (1-6), Akron faced 21 3rd downs. converting just 6. If Michigan can sustain some OL pressure, the mistakes should come.
The Spartans also have a fairly standard opponent in Minnesota. In saying that, Timmy's NU had enormous trouble against them last week, taking it into OT before eventually putting it to bed. Perhaps Minnesota will draw confidence from a tight game. But I hope not :-)
Game reviews etc. below as comments guys.

Well, I can;t believe I lost that game.
ReplyDeleteMinnesota - 42
Michigan State - 41
Absolutely terrible effort by myself and QB Kirk Cousins. The line reads great, 19 from 32 completions, 353 yards with 3 TD's. Until you hit the INT column. 3. 3 bastard picks thrown, 2 of which were tipped at the line, and landed softly in Minnesota hands.
Disgraceful. Absolutely honking.
Playes of the match were WR Fred Smith, who consistently beat his man for 193 yards in 9 receptions, 1 TD.
Golden Gopher's QB Adam Weber finished with 22 completions from 35 attempts, 430 yards, 3 TD's and 2 picks of his own. The clincher however, was the 18 yard rush with 30 seconds left on the clock to tie the game, and setup the game winning PAT.
I dunno how they did it, I was up by 6, just playing it out. Gave HB Edwin Baker a rest from 3 previous rushing plays, tipped pass, INT...fuck you LOL.
Anyway there goes my season. Best of luck to you guys :-)
The #22 Nittany Lions travelled to Ryan field to take on #3 Northwestern
ReplyDeletePenn State's first drive is a 3 and out, as NU's stingy run defence forces Penn to give up ground. The NU drive resulted in a TD, after a 4:00 minute drive where 3 different running backs handled the ball. WR Jeremy Ebert capped the drive with a 4 yard TD reception.
Both offences were able to move the ball to each others 40 yard lines, but both defences held leaving the score NU 7 Penn State 0 as the teams headed to the locker room.
Much like the first half, the first offensive possession, this time NU, was forced backwards with some ferocious run D. Penn State's next drive looked headed for the same fate until QB Newsome hit Senior WR Zug with a 35 yard bomb. Zug would then cap the drive with a 2 yard TD reception thrown perfectly to the back pilon, dropping in over CB Mabin's out stretched arms.
NU wasted no time regaining the lead, after a 20 yard kick return, Joe Mauro scrambled out of the pocket and fired across his body, back towards the middle of the field finding WR Ebert who was able to turn a 15yard first down completion into a 77 yard TD.
NU 14 Penn State 7
Penn's States next drive ended with a 3 and out punt with only 15 seconds remaining in the quarter. NU's next play set the theme for the drive, a handoff up the middle to Sophmore RB Daniel netted 8 yards heading into the final 5 minutes.
NU continued to kill the game with simple handoffs and was able to eke out 2 First downs. On 3rd and 3 with a little more than 2 minutes to go, NU called a "setup" Play Action stretch pass, NU had been destroying Penn with the stretch all game, but the Dline read the play the whole way pressuring Mauro into a pick.
Penn State would have just over 2 minutes to tie the game, unfortunatley 1 drop and some great tackling by NU halted the drive, in a somewhat cautios decision Penn State punt.
NU would not hand the ball back until there was less than 20 seconds on the clock, and Mauro had thrown his 3rd TD, a "setup" Play Action pass to TE Rooks to seal the win.
